Coup de Boule is a program by Radio Plus each Saturday evening where a couple of "pundits" talk about football. The show primarily revolves around the Barclays Premier League (BPL), which is the most popular league in Mauritius, but also covers all the major leagues in Europe. I am using the terms pundits very loosely because the guys who behind are the show are among the worst commentators I have heard in football.
Here are a few examples of the amazing feats they regularly accomplish.
Tactics are overrated
They know absolutely nothing about football tactics, formations and all the stuff you should be an expert at to analyze matches and player performances. And here I was, thinking that an understanding of football was a sine qua non requirement for this kind of a program.
A two-team league
If you knew nothing about football and listened to the program, you would think that the BPL consists only of two teams, Manchester United and Liverpool. Every football commentator is of course a fan of a team but when his entire contributions limit to his team's performance, that becomes an issue. From time to time, they do mention other teams such as Arsenal and Chelsea but the programme revolves a lot around Manchester United and Liverpool, which is weird considering their poor performance in the league this season.
Learning about players
One time, while accidentally listening to the programme when they were talking about Tottenham Hotspur, one of the "pundits" reached a new low by being unable to pronounce Dier. Imagine this, you come from Mauritius where you've been learning English since primary school, you call yourself a sports journalist but you cannot even pronouce Eric Dier properly. Even the MOZ guys, who are French and get a lot of names wrong since they have the excuse of not speaking English, have no problem pronouncing his name.
The whole programme reeks of repetition with the same commentary over and over again. As their expertise is lacking, this shows in the quality of their commentary. I mean, it's tough to come up with an exhaustive analysis of a match like Michael Cox if your only claim to comment about football matches is that you enjoy the sports (protip guys: read Cox's reports on his website to understand how it's done).
